Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care is special care that is given to an individual after receiving a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness or disease. Hospice Care treatment plans focus on the quality of life, and the comfort of the person, and not a curative treatment plan.
How long can a patient receive Hospice Care?
Hospice Care is covered under Medicare after a physician certifies that the patient has a life expectancy of fewer than 6 months. However, should the patient survive the initial certification, then the physician will continue to re-certify the illness.
Where can I receive Hospice Care?
Hospice Care is administered to the patient in the environment that is chosen by the patient, as long as the facility meets the physical needs of the individual. Typically, Hospice care is administered at home by the patient or a member of the patient's family, an assisted living facility, nursing home, hospice facility, or hospital.
Will I lose my existing benefits or coverage if I elect Hospice Care?
No, you can continue to receive your normal benefits, such as dental coverage, treatment for diabetes, or illnesses that are not related to the patients terminal illness.
